Cigarette smoking meets Japanese manner

Butt in the snowman

Japan is a crowded country.  There are 128 million people crammed into a space not much bigger than the state of California. And most of these people live in cities.  This may explain why they are so big on manners.

So five years ago Japan Tobacco Inc., a  giant tobacco monopoly in Japan, decided to educate those unruly cigarette smokers with a series of graphic poster campaigns.  Some of the ideas they come up with are so outlandish they’re almost untrue.  Here are some of my favourites.

Butt in the snow

Apprently it’s OK to leave yourself stuck upside down in the snow. I think that’ll leave some even bigger rubish…

Cigarette butt in the arm

And here’s another natural danger of being in Japan in the summer time.  You’ll need sun block, mosquito repellant and cigarette-proof sleeves!

Cigarette smoke and the fart

This is my absolute favourite of all.

Cigarette butt in the toilet

And as for this one,  I just like the look of this poster.

And there’s loads more on Japan Tobacco’s website.  Check it out.

Big thanks to Cherie for the info about the signs.
